Abstract:

Practical relevance:

Feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) is a major cause of feline morbidity. Following exposure to the virus, virtually all cats become persistently infected and many of these will develop recrudescent disease on one or more occasions during their lifetime. Acute ocular herpetic disease manifests as conjunctivitis, corneal ulceration and keratitis, and can be severe and painful. Repeated bouts of recrudescent ocular disease can lead to progressive corneal pathology that can be ultimately blinding in affected cats.

Global importance:

FHV-1 has a worldwide distribution, with reported exposure rates in some cat populations of up to 97%. As such it is a significant cause of clinical disease in the global cat population.

Patient group:

Young and adolescent cats are most at risk of acute primary disease, and the vast majority of these will become persistently infected. Around half of all persistently infected cats will shed virus at some stage in their life and these may develop recrudescent ocular disease.

Clinical challenges:

Treatment of FHV-1 ocular disease is challenging. Antiviral medications may be expensive, and require good owner and patient compliance. Clinical responses in patients can be variable. Selecting the appropriate therapeutic approach requires good clinical judgement, with assessment of factors such as severity and stage of clinical disease, patient and owner compliance, and financial considerations.

Evidence base:

Although a wide range of antiviral treatments is available, few have been tested in controlled clinical trials. Therapeutic decisions are, therefore, often based on results of in vitro studies, case-based reports and anecdote. Large, masked, controlled clinical trials are required in order to determine the efficacy of the antiviral drugs currently available to treat FHV-1.

Can cat eye herpes spread to humans?

Feline herpes virus is specific to cats. In fact, most mammals have their own type of herpes virus. These viruses will not infect other species, so feline herpes virus is not contagious to humans. The virus is a common respiratory pathogen that causes upper respiratory disease in most cats.

How serious is feline herpes?

Cat herpes is an extremely contagious disease that causes gunky swollen eyes and lots of sneezing. Like many upper respiratory infections, herpes in cats spreads easily in shelters, boarding kennels, and catteries. While there is no cure, most infected cats can still lead a happy and normal life.

Is cat eye herpes painful?

Corneal ulcers can be very painful and serious enough to cause noticeable scarring or even perforation of the normally clear cornea. After initial recovery from the herpesvirus infection, an estimated 80% of the cats become a carrier of the disease.

Can cats go blind from herpes?

Young kittens with herpes viral conjunctivitis may have such severe infection that their eyes become sealed shut with discharged matter. In this situation, the eyes must be opened or permanent damage, even blindness, may occur.

How can I treat my cats herpes at home?

Flare-ups of the cat herpes virus are commonly treated with ointments or eye drops. Your veterinarian may recommend giving your cat amino acid supplements to boost their immune system. You can also help your cat reduce flare-ups by providing them with a clean, comfortable environment.

How long can a cat live with feline herpes?

By managing stressors, and remaining current on vaccines, a pet infected with feline herpes can live a normal lifespan. Is FHV-1 contagious to humans?

Can cat herpes be cured?

There is no cure for herpes virus infections. The therapeutic goal is to reduce the frequency and severity of recurrences. Most cats respond well to medical management of the condition and lead normal lives.

What causes herpes in cats eyes?

How is a cat infected with feline herpesvirus? FHV infection is through direct contact with virus particles. This can be from the saliva, nose, or eye discharge of an infected cat, or from contaminated inanimate objects (i.e., clothing, toys, or food and water dishes).

What antibiotics treat feline herpes?

Famciclovir (brand name Famvir®) is an anti-viral medication used to treat feline herpesvirus (FHV-1).

What is idoxuridine used for in cats?

What is idoxuridine? Idoxuridine (brand names Dendrid®, Herplex®, Stoxil®) is an antiviral topical medication used to treat viral infections of the eye, such as feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) in cats. It may also be useful for treating canine herpesvirus-1 in dogs and equine herpesvirus-2 in horses.
